The Buzz on Superfoods and Why You Should Be Eating Them!

Superfoods.  Is this a buzz word or what is it about the foods on this list that make them so special?  Superfoods are nutrient rich foods that are said to be especially beneficial for health and well being. They are foods that contain higher quantities of antioxidants, minerals, and disease fighting properties than other foods.

While the intent of food is to nourish the body AND be enjoyable.  Most of the focus on food today is that it is fast, convenient, and enjoyable.  Little to no emphasis is put on the nutritional value of the food.  

While "superfood" may be a relatively "new" word and one not previously used by our grandparents, there is a reason for that.  Our grandparents used to eat real food.  Food from their own farms or from local farms.  The food was prepared fresh, not from a box and eating in restaurants was rare.  They didn't have to use the word "superfood", because, for the most part, their diet consisted of real "superfoods" all day long.

Today, even for the health conscious person, acquiring proper nutrition through our foods can be quite difficult.  Several studies have found that the nutrient content of our food has declined over the last 70 years.  For this reason, even if you do incorporate a large number of real foods and superfoods into your diet on a daily basis, supplementation is almost unavoidable.  I supplement daily with a moringa based supplement which is the most nutrient dense plant known to exist.  However, I don't stop there.  

I use many superfoods daily as I strive to rebuild my health from the inside out on an ongoing basis.  There are many ways to easily incorporate these foods into your diet, it's simply about having them on hand and being intentional about using them.  They can often be used in smoothies, salads, and just as snacks.  

When you think superfoods, you likely think blueberries, salmon, coconut oil.   And while those are a few, there are so many you can use.  And there doesn't need to be anything fancy about this.  I don't have time for fancy! I typically drink a smoothie daily (which may include chia seeds, dark greens/spinach, banana, berries), incorporate a salad that's easy to make (kale, quinoa, beets, and any variety of veggies), and at least one hot drink that is made up entirely of superfoods.  

When you are healing your body naturally it is a long term commitment.  It takes time and dedication, but I promise you it is so worth it.  I have an entire morning regimen that allows me to sneak in many superfoods first thing in the morning.  Below is one of my (almost) daily drinks filled with superfoods that give me energy, mental clarity, and is helping me restore my health.  I start with:

//Honey//

I start with honey!  I try to keep it to a teaspoon, but you can vary accordingly (keeping in mind, even though this is a superfood, you still need to go easy on natural sweeteners).  I use locally sourced, raw honey and encourage you to do the same.  Honey helps increase energy, decrease seasonal allergy symptoms, boost immune function, and it helps stabilize blood pressure and blood sugar.  It is full of antioxidants, anti-virals, and antifungals.  

//Cinnamon//

Next in the cup is cinnamon.  I just put a couple heavy shakes in (maybe 1/2 teaspoon).  Cinnamon is also full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.  It protects heart health, helps fight diabetes, fights infection, and viruses.

//Coconut Oil//

This goes in the cup third. One tablespoon.  We could talk about the health benefits of this one all day.  Coconut oil is a healthy fat (and we all NEED healthy fat), that controls blood sugar, promotes nutrient absorption, increase metabolism, strengthens the immune system and eliminates mental fatigue.  There are a million ways to use it, but by incorporating in this drink, it ensures that I get it every day.

//Maca Root Powder//

Next, I add a tablespoon of maca root powder.  Maca root is said to increase energy, help balance hormones, to improve memory and mood.  One of my biggest battles in dealing with hormone imbalance and so this is a must for me.  If you visit this company's site, they will help you determine the right variety of maca root for you.  Seriously, take more time to read about this one!

//Cacao//

Finally, I add 2 tablespoons of cacao (NOT cocoa).  Cocoa is derived from cacao, but is stripped of all good nutrients from the chemical processing.  There are so many benefits of cacao.  Cacao contains 40 times more antioxidants than blueberries; it is the highest plant-based source of iron, it's full of magnesium (the most deficient mineral in the western world); it has more calcium than cow's milk.  It is also a natural mood elevator and an anti-depressant.  Just be sure to buy a raw, non-alkalized form like the one in the above link.

So, to simplify.  Here is one of my (almost) daily superfood drinks:

In a large cup, combine:

1 t. honey

1/2 t. cinnamon

1 T. Coconut oil

1 T. Maca Root powder

2 T. Cacao powder

Combine this with 12-16 oz. of hot water and drink!  That's it!  It's literally just a matter of having these items on hand and making it a habit.  

The health benefits of intentionally adding real food and superfoods into our diet are life changing.  And it doesn't have to be hard, nor does it have to be fancy. It may take a little time and a little planning, but it will add so much energy to your day and your life, that once you start, you will fully understand the effect of food on our overall health; mind, body, and soul.
