5 Powerful Tips for Keeping Your Family Healthy This Cold and Flu Season

That dreaded time of year, when we start spreading the flu around like a football.  It means missed school, missed work, and just plain misery.  There are things that you can do to lower your likelihood of becoming a casualty to the flu this year.  Here is what we do to combat the flu:

//Wash Your Hands//

I'm sure you've heard this your whole life and it's nothing new, but it really is maybe the most effective way to prevent catching and spreading germs.  Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds at a time and keep your hands away from your nose and mouth!!!

//Sleep//

Adults require 7-8 hours of sleep/night, teens require 9-10 hours, and younger children require 10+ hours per night. According to Tim Morganthaler, MD, “Studies show that people who don’t get enough sleep or quality sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus, such as the common cold.” Lack of sleep can also effect recovery time.

//Boost Your Immune System//

What you fuel your body with is always important.  Stick to the majority of your diet being fruits and veggies  (and seasonal veggies are best) and supplement.  Whole food supplements are best and the one that my family uses can be found here.  The nutrition in this supplement is entirely plant based and contains over 92 nutrients that are absorbed directly into your blood stream.  

Probiotics—We take these everyday. They help to promote a healthy gut flora and can help clear out any illnesses that are trying to invade.

Vitamin D— We become more susceptible to illness in the winter than summer months due to a lack of vitamin D because we just don’t get the sunshine that we need during these months. Vitamin D is critical to overall health. Your doctor can test your vitamin D levels for you. I take a high dose on a daily basis, but you need to talk to your doctor and do your own research to know what the best dosage is for you.

Essential Oils—we don't go a day without supplementation and we also use oils daily, but the ones we use change depending on our needs.  At the first sign of a cold or flu (the first throat tickle, sneeze, etc), we start to use oils.  We use a combination and try to use them regularly until symptoms subside.  If we get to it at the first sign, we can often keep it from coming on or at least really lessen the symptoms.  What do we use?

     Oregano oil is a natural antibiotic and antifungal. It is a strong oil. Adding a few drops to your water can really help reduce symptoms of cold or flu. This oil always requires a carrier oil for topical use. It is not recommended for children 12 or under or for pregnancy women. It should only be used in a diffuser as a minor oil.

     Melaleuca or Tea Tree Oil—Though highly effective, this is a very safe oil to use. It is a very powerful stimulant to the immune system.

     Frankincense—this is one of my all time favorite oils. It can be used to strengthen the immune system by diffusing or taking in a capsule. It can also be used topically.

     Clove Oil and Cinnamon Oil/Proshield can also help protect the body against infection and speed flu recovery.

// EXERCISE //

With the days being shorter, it can be hard to find time to exercise and maybe just harder to find the motivation. However, studies find that even a 10 minute walk can promote improved health, ease depression and burn calories. So, even if you only want to commit to 10 minutes, that should be do-able. Most often, once you get moving, you’ll keep moving anyway! Find a form of exercise that you actually enjoy and do it. Don’t worry about whatever the latest fad is, walking, yoga, and running are just fine.  Get the whole family involved and make it even more fun!

// STAY HYDRATED //

Staying hydrated keeps our nose, throat, and mouth from drying out and makes it easier to clear mucous because it is thinner. The added moisture also prevents germs from latching on so easily. Aim for 64 oz. a day and start off with a glass of water first thing in the morning (add a little lemon for detoxification purposes).  Same thing for kiddos, they may need less and if you have a tough time getting them to drink water, infuse it with fruit!

Taking preventative steps is so worth it to avoid catching the cold or flu.  Take the time to take care of yourself with good rest, good nutrition, proper hydration, exercise, and supplementation.  And of course, hand washing!  These are great powerful and natural ways to fend off illness and to keep you and your family well every day!
